In today’s world, cases of revenge porn are increasing at an alarming rate. But what exactly is revenge porn? Revenge porn is when someone shares video or nude images of another person online without their approval. The act usually happens after, a breakup, need to make money or as a form of intimidation. Some people even do it for fun. At times the pictures or videos are spread by a stranger who may have hacked your computer, phone or a cloud picture account.

Revenge porn hurts the victim’s career, relationships, and mental health. Young generation increasingly becoming tech literate, the minors share and creates nude images on the internet. The internet does not forget, once an image uploads on the internet it can be downloaded by anyone and be saved in their device. So whether the image is deleted or not deleted from the internet, you don’t have much control over it and what someone else will use it for. Information circulates very fast on the internet.

Two rights that are violated with the issue of revenge porn:

    1. The right to private life
The act of revenge porn violates the privacy of the victim by exposing personal images or videos to millions without their consent. It’s a form of abuse that robs the victim individual’s identity, degrading the victim and for many people, this is where their conversation ends.

    2. Freedom of expression
This right restricts by several reasons such as the purpose of public safety, disclosure of information received in confidence and protection of the reputation and rights of others.
The legal system helps the victims of revenge porn and other attacks online by removing the content, representing them in family and civil courts and educating them about the application of criminal laws.

What to do if you are a victim of revenge porn

    a. Document everything
Take screenshots of all the pages and links posted. This substantial evidence can later be relevant when the person who posted the images and videos feels there is a chance being discovered.

    b. Remove the content from search engine results
Bing and Google have policies that help victims to requests removal of search engine results that may lead to a non-consensual distribution of intimate images and videos when one’s name added in it.

    c. Remove everything from social media
New policies in the past few months have banned revenge porn from social media platforms such as Facebook, tweeter, Instagram, Reddit, periscope, and Xbox live. Provide links and information about reporting it.

    d. Report to a law enforcement body
Countries do not have a law enforcement body to report the matter to the police. Take screenshots and present them as evidence to the authority. Report any crime you experienced like hacking, financial abuse, physical abuse, stalking, impersonation, coercion, harassment, and extortion.

    e. Send a digital millennium copyright act
Some websites take non-consensual content voluntarily while others other require a formal takedown letter. Digital Millennium Copyright act gives internet service provider place from liability for Copyright-infringing materials of their uses. Therefore, you cannot sue a website for posting your images. The site would lose its safe harbor if you sent the matter to digital millennium copyright act noticing them that you own the copyright they ignored.

    f. Improve your privacy and security settings
If you are being attacked online, restrict your Facebook setting, such that another person must seek your permission to post on your wall, tag you in an image and see the list of your friends.

The threat of distribution of sexual videos or images
Majority of the people distributing revenge porn without ones approval have threatened to do so. The offender creates fear for the victim and forces them to do the thing they don’t want to. Failure to which the content would be released to the internet. Civil and criminal law can be used to address the threat. If the victim is in an intimate relationship with the offender, a temporary order is issued by the civil court for an injunction restraining the offender from distributing the images.

    Hidden camera
Filming of sex without the consent or knowledge of the participant is illegal. It is also illegal to take photos of individuals without their knowledge.

    Impersonation
The internet has made it easy to impersonate people. Someone can create a social media account using the victim’s details, in a way that humiliates the victim’s family and friends. The impersonator can use the report to post nude pictures; videos create ads on craigslist. Some purchase websites with a URL with the victim’s name and use it to post embarrassing statements and images of the victim. If this happens, report the crime to the online platform where it occurs.

    Sextortion
This whereby abuse of power is used to control the victim. Sex traffickers lure minors and the poor with the hope of giving the jobs and a better life. It also involves when someone is forced to do something with a threat of realizing the sexual content.
If personal privacy is invaded by the internet the problem can be solved through:
. Request digital millennium copyright to remove the content.
. Confirming the identity of the suspect via IP address, websites hosts and social media sites.
. De-indexing from Yahoo, Google and search engines.
. Issue a restraining order through criminal court, the family court if applicable.
. Referrals from search engine optimization and online reputation management.
. Inform law enforcers if the crime involves extortion, unlawful surveillance harassment or violation of any law.
. Investigate with employer or school if online content affects the employment, employability or schooling.

    Conclusion
Revenge porn is a practice that demoralizes the victim and lowers their self-esteem. Most victims end up killing themselves because of the harsh judgment they receive from the society.

It is horrendous to imagine that their are people who would exploit and harm others in such a manner, yet, one must be realistic and admit that it is surely prevalent within today’s society. I have known many a person who have been put in precarious positions because of sensitive content that they have shared with others. It is not pretty. That’s why, I always encourage everyone NOT to take nude images or videos, and DEFINITELY NOT to share them around in such a cavalier fashion. Today’s friend or lover can easily turn into tomorrow’s enemy, and through sharing such content, that person is armed with the ability to cause a great deal of harm. Abstaining from the risky act entirely is the best way to go.

Absolutely horrible, yet unfortunately true. A dear friend of mine was in an unfortunate position with a man of low cunning that tried to blackmail her with images and videos he’d secretly taken of the both of them. It goes to show the lengths some people would go to, and how you can’t really be caught unawares, as you don’t know who you can truly trust.

It is despicable to see the horrors people are using the internet for. They are quite literally using it as a weapon, one which can inflict a lot of emotional and mental damage. That is why cyber security is really important, and why being very conscientious in regards to using the web is also as crucial. One cannot engage in such activities in good conscience without expecting they might come back to bite him in the ass. That is why I steer clear of all such behaviour myself. Whoever wishes to see my ding dong is more than welcome to request a private audience, in person.

I will admit that in my younger years, not too far back, yet not so recent either, I was in a relationship with someone I trusted, and he turned out to be a complete douchebag. He began sharing around intimate images I’d shared with him privately to our classmates to gloat, and that was how I learnt my lesson the hard way. Do not ever, ever, under any circumstances, exchange sensitive content or post it online. It will very likely bite you in the ass.
